Facebook aims to declutter the iOS Contacts app by no longer syncing friends

Over the past week a number of 9to5 readers have noticed issues with their Facebook contacts within the Contacts app on iOS 6 and up that are automatically synced when logging into Facebook through Settings. Some users have taken to the Apple support forums to discuss the problem, noting that a large portion of their contacts from Facebook no longer appear in the iOS Contacts app. Rather than a bug, we reached out to Facebook about the problem who told us it’s actually Facebook’s new effort to remove “phone book entries that were not useful.”

In other words, Facebook is trying to remove some of the spam from your iOS Contacts app by no longer syncing friends that have no useful contact information. According to a Facebook spokesperson, friends that have no contact information on their profile other than a @facebook.com email address will not be synced to the Contacts address book going forward.

The result, of course, is you might notice more than a few of your Facebook friends disappearing from Contacts. You can always add them back manually, but Facebook is thinking the majority of users will be happy with its decision to declutter its iOS sync feature.

Facebook For iOS Gets #Hashtags, Ability To Make Restaurant Reservations With OpenTab

Today Facebook released an update for its iOS app that adds support for hashtags, an aspect of Twitter that Facebook recently added on its desktop site. Users can use hashtags in statuses and such to filter topics.

Another notable feature that was added today is the ability to make a restaurant reservation within the Facebook app using OpenTable. Using “Nearby Places” and official pages for restaurants that have added OpenTable integration, Facebook users can quickly make reservations without needing to open a separate webpage. Apple integrates OpenTable into Siri to help make restaurant reservations as well.

TV listing information for U.S. primetime shows and movie Pages is now displayed in the app. Facebook notes that today’s update also introduces “faster loading and a cleaner design for timelines on iPad,” so be sure to grab it in the App Store.

Facebook Login Update Makes It Harder For Apps To Spam Your Wall

Using Facebook is usually one of the quickest ways to log in to apps and other services without creating an account, but there’s nothing more annoying on Facebook than giving an app access to your account only to have them post spam on your wall without permission.

Facebook announced today that it has finally come up with a solution by updating Facebook Login for mobile so that apps have to ask you separately for permission to post on your behalf.

The update should result in 31% faster load up times, too. And if you decide later that you really want to share all your progress from Kitchen Scramble, or any other apps, you can do that too.

Facebook prepares major updates to iPhone apps as top engineer returns to Apple

Facebook is preparing a pair of major updates for its most popular iPhone applications, according to a source familiar with the apps. Facebook is testing an updated version of its main iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch client that integrates the social network’s powerful Graph Search tool. Graph Search is a feature that allows Facebook users to locate fellow users that have similar interests. For example, a Graph Search user can search for all friends who “Like” a certain Facebook page, musician, or movie. The upcoming app update incorporates Graph Search into the Facebook app’s main search bar.

In addition to the aforementioned update to the main Facebook for iOS application, Facebook is preparing a redesign of its Messenger app. Facebook is said to be internally testing two new versions of Messenger. The first version is said to look largely similar to the Messages application bundled into iOS. That version includes green interface elements. The second version in testing, which the source says is more likely to ship to end-users, is heavy on white space and very fitting for iOS 7′s design. It is not filled with blue interface elements like the new Facebook app. The new app has tabs for active/recent chats, contacts, and settings across the bottom…

Besides the fresh interface, the new Messenger for iPhone app will be able to integrate with the user’s iPhone contact list to find friends capable of being messaged via Facebook’s system. The new app also includes a redesigned Home screen icon that is a blue chat bubble with a white border. A similarly new version of Facebook Messenger for Android is also said to be in the works. Besides the new Facebook apps, Facebook is said to be testing several new video filters for upcoming versions of Instagram. It is currently unclear when Facebook intends to issue these updates, but all of these software enhancements are all currently in a “dogfooding” stage.

Last year, Facebook went on a hiring spree of Apple employees in a move to build faster, more robust software for iOS and its own Android-based Facebook Home software. One of Facebook’s most notable hires out of Cupertino was Greg Novick. He was the lead engineer in charge of re-building Facebook’s app. Before working at Facebook, Novick was one of the original designers of the original iPhone software and developed the first Phone and Mail apps to ship on the iPhone. According to several sources, Novick has departed Facebook and will return to Apple. Perhaps Novick is working on the interface for Apple’s upcoming wearables.
