Apple Unveils OS X Mountain Lion With Over 100 New Features
Apple announced today that it has just released the developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion, its ninth major release of OS X, bringing popular apps and features from the iPad to the Mac, namely Messages, Notes, Reminders and Game Center, as well as Notification Center, Share Sheets, Twitter integration and AirPlay Mirroring. Mountain Lion is the first OS X release built with iCloud in mind to make it easy to set up and integrate with apps. The developer preview of Mountain Lion also introduces Gatekeeper, a revolutionary security feature that helps keep you safe from malicious software by giving you complete control of what apps are installed on your Mac.
Mac users can upgrade to Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store in late summer 2012.“The Mac is on a roll, growing faster than the PC for 23 straight quarters, and with Mountain Lion things get even better,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The developer preview of Mountain Lion comes just seven months after the incredibly successful release of Lion and sets a rapid pace of development for the world’s most advanced personal computer operating system.”

Mountain Lion eh? Sounds interesting. Was wondering what big cat could possibly come after Lion. That is a pretty short release period for OSX.

OS X Mountain Lion will only allow applications downloaded from the Mac App Store and identified developers by default, according to Daring Fireball and MacWorld.
The new setting is part of Gatekeeper, a feature in OS X Mountain Lion that protects you from downloading and running malicious software.
Developers can sign up for free-of-charge Apple developer IDs which they can then use to cryptographically sign their applications. If an app is found to be malware, Apple can revoke that developer's certificate, rendering the app (along with any others from the same developer) inert on any Mac where it's been installed.
Interestingly, our install of OS X Mountain Lion was set to allow applications from anywhere; however, that may be due to the fact that it was an update and not a clean install.

Wait! Does that mean we'll finally be able to use iBooks on the Mac, now?
