Apple on its way to developing a better facial recognition system

In a world where technology advancements are made on a daily basis, the innovations brought about by devices like the iPhone and iPad have prompted the public to expect more and more from the company producing them. So it comes as no great shocker that Apple is apparently preparing to start working on a highly secure facial recognition system.

Earlier this month, Apple filed a patent application called “3D Object Recognition”. Strangely enough it was first originally filled in Sweden by a company that goes by the name of Polar Rose. Apple incorporated the company in 2012 paying $29 million. The rights to the patent are now owned by Apple. The patent illustrates "a method, device, system, and computer program for object recognition of a 3D object of a certain object class using a statistical shape model for recovering 3D shapes from a 2D representation."

The technology would work by employing the help of multiple photos and perhaps even video in order to create a 3D map of the user’s visage. Once saved into the system, the 3D representation that can be compared with another 3D representation built from a 2D image via the phone’s camera.

Other devices have been known to incorporate the facial recognition feat and maybe the most well known is the Galaxy Nexus Android 4.0. Nevertheless the system proved to be easy to crack. All intruders needed to do is hold a picture of the device owner in front of the camera to be scanned and they could get access. Apple will probably have to build on that in order to come up with a better security solution.
