Ultrabooks are still viewed as a pricey alternative to the MacBook Air

Ultrabooks were born from the marriage of Intel and Microsoft, as the two companies attempted to squeeze their way in the laptop market to rival Apple and its MacBook Air line. But apparently their efforts have been in vain. According to Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brain J. White, the battle is already lost, namely he says, because of the prices.

"Our checks thus far indicate that the price points for the new releases will be well over the $699 price threshold that we deem necessary for this new category to be a big success,"

White was present at the Computex show, held in Taipei, Taiwan and got to examine some of the next generation Ultrabooks. One example he gave were Gigabyte-branded devices. Reportedly they will come packed with an 11-inch screen and carbon fiber exterior. The devices are expected on the market in July with a price tag ranging from $999 to $1,299.

Even if White got a look at some decently attractive designs of Ultrabooks by Acer and Asustek he still feels that users should be getting a bigger discount when it comes to buying these new products. Apple is a well established brand, and some customers might not feel they want to take the risk and try these models out, when the alternative of paying a smaller or equal price ($999 for a MacBook Air) is available to them.

White is a well known supporter of the Apple ecosystem, and just last week at the Microsoft Forum 2012 keynote address at Computex stated that even though Windows 8 comes packed with a whole host of nice functionalities, he still considers Apple’s “digital grid” the most intuitive and successful operating system out there.
