Apps & updates: Adobe Photoshop Express, Growl, SketchBook Express, Angry Birds Space

Below is our usual list of newly released apps and updates that landed in the App Store today. Some of the more notable apps on the list include updates to iOS apps Adobe Photoshop Express, and SketchBook Express, and Mac App Store apps Growl and Angry Birds Space. We will keep the list updated as more apps and updates are released throughout the day.

Adobe Photoshop Express Version 2.5: The free universal iPhone and iPad app was updated to include the Adobe Effects Pack of “45- eye-catching effects” and the Enhanced Adobe Border Pack with 18 new borders as in-app purchases. The update also includes improvements to borders, effects, and editing, as well as Tumblr and Twitter sharing options, improvements to Facebook and Flickr sharing, and support for the iPad’s Retina display.

SketchBook Express Version 2.5: The free version of Autodesk’s SketchBook Pro app was updated today with a few new features including palm rest, a random color option in Color Editor, and other enhancements and bug fixes.

Voice Answer Version 1.3: We told you about the Voice Answer app before when Apple rejected it for being too much like Siri. Today, Apple has finally allowed an update to the app that turns the app’s AI— named Eve—into a “a fully animated 3D robot.” The update also includes voice messaging, email, and calling, and it now supports 54 languages for translations.

Growl Version 1.4: Popular Mac notification app Growl received an update on the Mac App Store today with dozens of enhancements and tweaks to the service. The app’s release notes mentioned: “Major improvements to networking,” “Applications Tab Redesign,” and a long list of other improvements.

Angry Birds Space Version 1.2.0: The same as the iOS apps the other day, the Mac App Store version of Angry Birds Space now includes the “delicious food planet of Utopia,” which features 10 new levels for the title that recently reached 100 million downloads.

AutoCAD 2012 and 2013 Do Not Yet Work With Mountain Lion

Autodesk has issued a support document outlining which of its products do not work with the just-released OS X Mountain Lion:
The following products are currently NOT supported on the Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) operating system:

    - AutoCAD 2013 for Mac
    - AutoCAD 2012 for Mac
    - AutoCAD LT 2013 for Mac
    - AutoCAD LT 2012 for Mac

If any of these products are installed on Mountain Lion, undesirable side effects can occur, including issues with Installer re-start, resetting applications, cursor missing when printing to PDF, and more. Our engineers are working round the clock to support Mountain Lion for these products, however no support is currently available.

Until such time as a service pack is available, we highly recommend NOT installing Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) on any machines where AutoCAD 2013 for Mac, AutoCAD 2012 for Mac, AutoCAD LT 2013 for Mac, or AutoCAD LT 2012 for Mac is required.

Autodesk also says that a Beta program adding support for Mountain Lion to AutoCAD 2012 and 2013 will be coming shortly, though doesn't include any specifics about a timeline.

As always, it is recommended that those using their computers in a professional, production environment should hold off on any upgrades to either software or operating systems until the makers of all the products they use confirm that everything works as it should.

Adobe releases Retina version of Photoshop and Illustrator CS6; Retina Display

Adobe gave us a sneak peak at their new version of Photoshop and Illustrator CS6 which is blessed with a healthy mix of new features (below) but headlined by Retina Display overhaul or “HiDPI” as they like to call it. As you’d expect, the difference is night and day on rMBPs. Everything is just as clear as you’d expect and there is simply no going back.

The Retina update just hit Adobe’s update servers so it is in the wild and ready for your perusal. If you are using a 13- or 15-inch Retina Display-enabled Mac and are down with CS6, by all means, get downloading. This is a free update for All Photoshop 13 customers as well as CS6 and Creative Cloud subscribers. We’d be remiss if we didn’t remind readers that Creative Cloud pricing is set to change Dec. 31st but it is currently as low as $19.99/month or 40% off for CS updaters.

Adobe has more exciting announcements lined up starting tomorrow at their CreatNOW event.

Some other notable features from the release notes:
