Apple Launches New MacBooks at WWDC 2012

Apple’s WWDC 2012 has kicked off in grand style today with a keynote speech by CEO Tim Cook, who was introduced by a comic turn from Siri! Cook then handed over the stage to Phil Schiller to talk about the long-rumored refresh to Apple’s notebook line up. According to AppleInsider’s live blog of the keynote, Schiller first introduced the new MacBook Air, with 3rd-gen Core a.k.a. Ivy Bridge, up to 8GB 1600MHz memory, up to 60% faster graphics, and up to 2.0GHz dual-core i7. The 11-inch model will be 1366x768, will start at $999 and go up to $1099. The 13-inch Airs will cost from $1199-$1499, and the 15-inch MacBook Pro will cost from $1799-$2199, will have 7 hours battery life, and will still have an optical drive.

Next up, we have the announcement of a new MacBook Pro line, which had been rumoured over the past few weeks. Schiller says that it will have a “killer display” and is “the most beautiful computer we’ve ever made.” It is extremely thin, 0.71 inches, to be precise, and weighs 4.46lbs. The new line will have a Retina Display, 15.4 inches, with 2880x1800 pixel density, 220 pixels-per-inch, the highest resolution notebook in the world. It will have better viewing angles, higher contrast ratios and less glare.

This new MacBook Pro has up to 2.7GHz Core i7s, up to 16GB RAM, and Kepler GT 650m with 1GB of VRAM. Battery life is 7 hours. The new Pro is completely built around flash storage, with a maximum 768GB Flash hard drive. It will have an SD card slot, HDMI, USB2/3 combo and headphone jack, two Thunderbolt ports, and a glass multitouch trackpad and backlit keyboard. And that’s not all, with a FaceTime HD camera and stereo speakers and dual microphones. Prices start at $2199 for 2.6GHz quad-core with 8GB of RAM and 256GB Flash drive.

Best news of all, they all ship today!

Nice specs....great to see a dedicated nVidia graphics card in there, but I guess you'd need that to drive such a high-res display. Only flash storage available I notice, and no apparent way to change to a standard HDD. Personally I think that's a bit limiting. And no DVD drive either.....I could live without that I guess. Out of my price range though sadly :(
