Smart TV Makers Fear Apple Dominating Their Industry

AppleInsider reports today on a new story in DigiTimes that says that some of the big movers and shakers in the TV industry are alarmed enough at the prospect of Apple dominating the smart TV market as they do the tablet market to have started teaming up to ensure that doesn’t happen. DigiTimes says that it has heard from industry sources that companies such as TPV Technology and LG Electronics are either teaming up together or looking for other new partners within the industry. The sources say that China’s Changhong TV brand has also formed an alliance, and is planning on launching a cloud-based interface for its TVs within the next three years. Basically, DigiTimes says that the industry is panicking at the thought of Apple releasing its own brand of Smart TV, especially as they think it could then go on to dominate the market, which is expected to have a 40% penetration rate by 2014. AppleInsider writes that it is thought that Apple will be releasing its own Smart TV by early 2013 at the latest, with Foxconn and Sharp already signed up as Apple's partners in the venture.
