iPhone 5 Goes On Sale In The U.S.

    A happy iPhone 5 customer.

The iPhone 5 just went on sale across the east coast of the United States. As expected, the device has spawned lengthy queues outside of Apple retail stores all over, with more than 700 people in line outside of Apple’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York.Fortune’s Philip Elmer DeWitt is outside the Fifth Avenue store, and he described the queue there this morning:

"We’re here at the big glass cube of Apple’s (AAPL) flagship Fifth Avenue store for the launch of the iPhone 5. The queue of customers isn’t as long as the 1,200 that greeted the iPad 2, but at 7 a.m. — one hour before doors open — I counted 710 heads, 52% more than the 400 at the iPhone 4S launch."

The iPhone 5 is expected to become Apple’s fastest-selling iPhone yet. The Cupertino company saw two million pre-orders for the device during the first 24 hours alone — double that for the iPhone 4S last year — and new online order are now facing a month-long wait for shipping.

Look At All These iPhone 5s Flooding FedEx’s Distribution Center [Image]

FedEx is gearing up to deliver a whole mess of iPhone 5s today, and they are almost literally swimming in a sea of iPhone 5 boxes at their distribution center. I can only spot about three boxes that aren’t iPhones making their way through the processing belt, and it looks like one iPhone 5 fell off. I hope that one’s not yours.

Apple Announces iPhone 5 Sales Top Five Million In First Weekend

Apple has announced that iPhone 5 sales surpassed a whopping five million units in just three days following the handset's launch on Friday, September 21. Demand for the device has exceeded Apple's initial supply, and while the majority of pre-orders have been shipping, many are scheduled to arrive in October.

The iPhone 5 made its debut in 9 markets around the world on Friday, and it's set to arrive in another 22 on September 28th. For those who didn't get one over the weekend, Apple retail stores will continue to receive regular deliveries, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook:

"Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible. While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone."

In comparison, the iPhone 4S sold 4 million units during its launch weekend last October, which makes the iPhone 5 the fastest-selling iPhone yet. Though that was to be expected with more than two million pre-orders within 24 hours.

Apple also announced in its press release this morning that iOS 6 is now installed on more than 100 million iOS devices. That's pretty incredible when you consider it's only been in public hands since last Wednesday.

What happened to Apple’s supply of iPhones?

When Apple announced sales of 5 million iPhone 5 units this morning for the device’s launch weekend, we noted the number was significantly under the up to 10 million predicted by many analysts. While Apple previously announced pre-orders for iPhone 5 doubled the iPhone 4S with 2 million in 24 hours, sales only grew roughly 25 percent from the 4-million iPhone 4S units sold in its opening weekend. The chart above, courtesy of BusinessInsider, shows Apple’s launch weekend sales experienced a large slow down this year. Sales from iPhone 4 to 4S were up 135 percent compared to the 25 percent growth between the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 launch, despite the new device selling in an additional two countries. However, according to one of the analysts, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, Apple’s numbers did not include up to 1 million units pre-ordered and expected for delivery in October.
