iOS and OS X to Merge in 2012?

Barron’s reports today on a note to clients from analyst Peter Misek at Jeffries & Co., who believes that Apple is planning to merge iOS and OS X as early as 2012. Misek says that merging the two operating systems would give Apple “synergies”, such as better gross margins and easier licensing of content. This could also tie in very well with the forthcoming launch of iCloud, as Misek says that consumers could view the same licensed content across all Apple devices and computers.

“Users want to be able to pick up any iPhone, iPad, or Mac (or turn on their iTV) and have content move seamlessly between them and be optimized for the user and the device currently being used,” Barron’s quotes Pisek as saying. “We believe this will be difficult to implement if iOS and OS X are kept separate.”
Misek says that he thinks the single-platform OS will be created in the second half of 2012 or some time in 2013, and will be tied in with the advent of the multi-device platform-capable A6 chip, which he says will be used in the Macbook Air following on from its debut in the iPad 3 in early 2012, and what he refers to as the iPhone 5 next summer (according to Barron’s, Misek considers the iPhone due to be released this September to be the iPhone 4S, not the iPhone 5).
