Apple Starts Selling $999 “Education Only” iMac

MacRumors reports today that Apple has started selling a low-end (as much as an iMac can be low-end!) iMac for $999 that is only available to educational institutions and not to individuals. According to MacRumors, this new iMac made its debut on Apple’s Higher Educational online store today, complete with a list of its scaled-down specs, which are as follows:

    • 3.1 GHz Intel Core i3 Dual-Core
    • 21.5-inch LCD
    • AMD Radeon HD 6750 with 256MB
    • 2GB RAM
    • 250GB Hard Drive
    • SuperDrive
    • OS X Lion
MacRumors notes that there is no Thunderbolt port on the iMac, only a mini Display Port. And for those reading this who are not an educational institution, but still fancy getting themselves a cheaper iMac, MacRumors points out that you can still pick yourself up an $899 20” iMac powered by Intel Core 2 Duo, and pre-loaded with previous OS X Snow Leopard rather than the latest OS X Lion.
