Verizon Follows AT&T Blocking Jailbreak Tethering

Taking AT&T ‘s example, Verizon has recently begun blocking illegal tethering, preventing jailbreak utilities to work on their network. This way, the company is trying to stay on top of the wireless market, making their move just days after rival AT&T started stopping illegal data tetherers as well. While AT&T automatically directed jailbreakers to its cheapest data plan at $45 a month, Verizon requires users to have a hot-spot capable plan of $20 a month for tethering data from their phones to other devices. They would be automatically directed to a Verizon webpage whenever they try to tether through such jailbreak apps like MyWi.

Verizon, who is US’s number one wireless carrier, seems to be changing their data plans, taking them more seriously, forcing illegal tetherers to go with more expensive offers. It isn’t the first time Verizon follows its rival’s steps in changing the data plan options. In February, Verizon started being a carrier for Apple’s iPhone, who, until that moment, was exclusively carried by AT&T. In July this year, Verizon made a move that its rival carrier had done one year before, removing the unlimited plan option and replacing it with more expensive plans. Now, Verizon is following AT&T again by blocking jailbroken tetherers.

For the time being, Verizon is the number one wireless carrier in US, but this thing could soon change. AT&T and T-Mobile are planning a merger and if the fusion is successful, the Texas-based carrier would improve its network and add 20 million more subscribers, leaving the current leader in second place.
