With the rise of tablets and other devices with internet access…it’s not what’s the real point of an iPhone…but any phone. Maybe the cell phone, as we know it now, might go the way of the beeper. My son actually text more than he uses voice, so maybe an iPod with 3G might be something he would buy. I tried to use my iPad as a phone until my wife said I looked silly holding it up to my ear.  I might give an iPod with 3G a try depending on the cost.

Phones could never be replaced, especially not my tablets, like you said making a call on a clunky tablet and holding up to your ear would seem pretty stupid. Tablets are becoming replacements for laptops as they become more and more powerful and portable.

This is just my opinion, but I don’t think tablets are replacing laptops. I think laptops will replace desktops. Laptops are getting more powerful, also. A new MacBook Air is more powerful than the desktop I am using now. The only reason I don’t want a MBA because I want an i7 27” iMac more and it looks as if Apple is not going to update the Mac Pro. I could be wrong, I once said the original iPhone would not catch on. So lets look at what you were saying, “the point of an iPhone or,” or any cell phone. You use a cell phone for mobile real-time voice communications. I said I looked silly using my iPad, but I was able to achieve the real-time voice communications. If I was able to achieve the level of communications with an iPod 3G (which could be called a small tablet) like I can with an iPhone, I would not need an iPhone or any phone.

You're right when you say you wouldn't need an iPhone or any phone, but then there's more phones than iPods, therefore I think iPod's will be useless and nobody would buy them. They would basically just be phones so it would merge with iPhone.

I just use the App Line 2 from the App Store for phone calls and texts on WiFi. Line 2 works great. I've had it for over a year. Used to have it on my iPhone 4 before I sold it and got an iPod Touch 4 and added Line 2. Works on WiFi. If I need to make a call and not near WiFi, I have a prepaid MiFi unit. Saves me a lot of money over my former iPhone plan.

Somehow I see the slow creep upgrades of the iPod touch as Apples way of sneaking in the back door of becoming their own network provider, maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm not.
