iOS 6 beta 3 for Apple TV brings expanded AirPlay control

You can select your AirPlay-enabled speakers from the AirPlay menu, picture source

The latest beta of iOS 6 makes the Apple TV set-top box beyond a device that simply receives media, allowing users to actively stream audio to external AirPlay-enabled speakers.

With iOS 6 Beta 3, users can access enhanced features available in the AirPlay section of the device settings. The new functionality, highlighted by FlatPanelsHD on Wednesday, allows users to choose external speakers to send audio.

Running the latest software, the Apple TV will detect any AirPlay-enabled speakers on a user's home network, and they will be available to select for sound output. The new feature is said to be fully operational in the latest pre-release build of iOS 6, allowing users to send audio from any content, including video, to wireless AirPlay-capable speakers.

Soon-to-be-released iOS 6 has a new interesting feature for the Apple TV box. In the AirPlay menu users can now select which AirPlay-enabled speakers they want the TV sound coming out from. Never again will you have to use audio cables when connecting external speakers to your TV.

    AIRPLAY SPEAKER-OUT IN APPLE TV

Apple continues to expand their AirPlay system that supports music, video, pictures, and games. With AirPlay users can stream media files between devices and the Apple TV will soon get a new AirPlay speaker-out feature.
Currently, an Apple TV running the latest publicly released version of iOS only has the ability to receive AirPlay content. The existing AirPlay settings on the Apple TV simply to turn the feature on or off, and set a password.

With the latest update for Apple TV you can stream video to your TV and sound to your AirPlay-enabled speakers

Many TV users want to connect their TV to a sound system or receiver but it requires either digital or analog cables – and requires the sound system to be located relatively close to the TV. What if you playback show video on the TV screen and stream audio to your external speakers – wirelessly?

This is now possible with the $99 Apple TV box. Only developers have access to the speaker-out function so far but iOS 6 will be released to the public later this year. A few developers have let us know that the feature is working and is fully functional in the latest beta 3 of iOS 6 for the Apple TV box.
The new software update will help to make the Apple TV a more independent device less reliant on external devices. For example, users could access their iCloud-stored music library on an Apple TV, and use the set-top box to stream that music elsewhere, such as to speakers connected to an Apple AirPort Express.

The AirPlay speaker-out function can be found in the AirPlay menu on Apple TV. From here you can select all your AirPlay speakers in your home. The Dolby setting option in the audio has to be turned off. Otherwise, sound volume is very low, it is said.

iOS 6 is expected to be released with the new iPhone in September or October. The AirPlay speaker-out feature could also potentially eliminate requirements for audio cables in the rumored Apple HDTV.
Because AirPlay does not support 5.1 surround sound, users with the latest beta of iOS 6 for Apple TV indicated to FlatPanelsHD that Dolby Digital audio must be disabled, or else the volume will be very low. That setting can be accessed in the system's "Audio & Video" options.

Last month, Apple's second iOS 6 beta for Apple TV added the ability to customize and reorder the layout of application icons, just like on the iPhone and iPad. The addition helped to fuel speculation that Apple is gearing up to give the Apple TV its own App Store with third-party applications.

How to Fix the Apple TV 5.1.1 Ethernet Update Bug

Apple last Thursday released Software Update 5.1.1 for second- and third-generation Apple TVs. In addition to stability and performance fixes, it also introduced support for the new “Up Next” feature found in iTunes 11. Unfortunately, a number of users are reporting problems with the update, resulting in aborted downloads and failures to reboot following an update attempt. Thankfully, TidBITS summarizes the solution: update over Wi-Fi.

Step 1: Unplug the Ethernet cable from your Apple TV.

Step 2: Connect to a Wi-Fi network using your Apple TV and attempt to update the device again.

Step 3: If the Apple TV is unable to boot, use a micro USB cable to connect it to a Mac or PC running iTunes (third-generation Apple TV owners also need to connect the Apple TV's power cord while it connected to the computer).

Step 4: Open iTunes and wait for the Apple TV to appear in the Devices section of your iTunes sidebar (for iTunes 10) or under your Devices button in the upper right portion of the window (for iTunes 11). Select the Apple TV from the list and choose "Restore."

Step 5: Wait for iTunes to download the restore firmware for your Apple TV and for the restore process to complete. Once completed, disconnect the Apple TV from the computer, reconnect it to your television, boot it up, and attempt to update again via a Wi-Fi connection.

The Mac Observer has followed up with several readers who performed the steps above and all reported that their device updated successfully. Thus far, it appears that only the update process is affected by the bug in the 5.1.1 software; after updating, users can reconnect their Apple TV to an Ethernet connection and content will be delivered normally.

For users who have yet to update, however, and who do not require immediate access to the “Up Next” feature, we recommend waiting to update until Apple releases a fix for the issue.

Apple TV updated with Bluetooth keyboard support, Up Next, enhanced iTunes

After releasing iOS 6.1 with support for more LTE carriers, Siri movie ticket purchasing, and more, Apple has also released an update to Apple TV bringing Bluetooth keyboard support (as previously discovered), Up Next, and an enhanced iTunes in the Cloud service. As highlighted in the image above, Apple is bringing the Up Next feature it first introduced in iTunes 11 to Apple TV users, along with the previously discovered Bluetooth keyboard support and the ability to browse and play your purchased iTunes music from iCloud.

Apple today released iOS 6.1 to end users after first releasing a beta version to developers back in November. The update enables movie ticket purchasing through Siri, redesigned music control buttons, and new MapKit framework enhancements.
