New apple white remote(1st gen remote) wont work with Apple TV 3rd gen?

Basically I lost my aluminum remote that come with the apple tv 3rd gen and I lost it, so I purchased a brand new white remote which I received today and it wont pair up with my apple tv at all. I have tried pressing just one button but the light on the apple tv doesn't even flicker or change. I find it highly thrustrating that I spend money on something that doesn't work.

I have tried holding menu and fast forward or even menu and rewind and nothing happens at all.

    Please help cheers.

It looks like there is a different method for pairing a white remote and for pairing an Aluminium one:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1555

    Is this what you tried?
'Deep Thought' - Mac Mini Late 2018- macOS Mojave (10.14.5)
'Marvin' - Mac Mini Late 2014 - macOS Mojave (10.14.5)
    'Orac' - MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012 - macOS Mojave (10.14.5)

    iPhone 6S - iOS 12.3.1
    iPad Pro 12.9" - iOS 12.3.1

Tried that nothing happens, not even a flicker on the light. I've sent off for a new battery

If you happen to own an iPhone or an iPad, you can download the Remote app from the App Store. It works great with my Apple TV and the typing is much easier with the iOS keyboard.

If I may add. The Remote app works via wifi eliminating the need to have the ATV in full view.

Speaking of which I use Logitech's Harmony Link remote control. It's connected to the main router and I control it from an iPod Touch. With that, the Remote App and the Splastop App to control the Mac I can control every device I own. Everything and my Mac Mini is connected to a single tv set, all hidden. No need to POINT a remote... Music, video, Internet, Mail, all at the same screen.
