iMac suddenly wont connect to internet...
Hi. My Imac has been working fine with this router for over a year. A few days ago all of the sudden it would not connect to the internet despite being connected with full bars to the wireless network. The router and internet service are fine because im using an ipad on it. i never had any problems with using multiple devices at the same time. Ive tried a whole bunch of things but cant get it to work. I am running 10.6.8. Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you able to connect you Mac to the router via an Ethernet cable?

unfortunately...i rent and my internet comes with the apt. the router is upstairs with the landlord. they have reset it a couple of times already. i have an imac desktop and it isnt the easiest to take elsewhere. i will if i have to, but if i can avoid doing so, id like to.
i have tried resetting pram. using static ip address. using network settings on the functional ipad. deleting systemconfig folder.
when i use static ip, it says connected, looks like it is searching, but still doesnt work...help with suggestions plz!

Mmm...that does make it a little more difficult! Do you know the IP address of the router?

If you do know (or can find out) the router ip address, could you start the Network Utility application, which can be found under Applications > Utilities > Network Utility, and select the Ping tab. Enter the router IP address in the box provided and then click the Ping button. Let me know what happens.

i got the router ip address from the network settings on the ipad im using. it was 198.168.1.1 its my understandin(could be completely wrong!) that the ip address used for routers is usually the same n e ways. i entered it into the ping thing in network utilities just now.
it said...
ping has started...
ping 192...etc: 56 data bytes
request timeout for icmp_seq 0
--then it says same thing thru seq 8--
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

maybe i have the wrong ip for the router. i put in the ip address that was listed under INFO in the network utility, and then it said 10 packets transmitted, 10 received...hmmmm....but maybe ats just the ip for the computer...

No, sorry, you were pinging your iMac then.
When you tried to use a static ip address, did you enter the DNS Server ip address as well? This is an ip address you will have to get from your Internet Service Provider.

OK, it's possible that there is a DNS problem, and the DNS cache just needs resetting. Can you open a Terminal window (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and type the following, followed by return:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache
You may be asked for your password but that's OK.
