Evernote brings note editing improvements to the iPhone

Evernote has released an update to its iOS application with major enhancements to the note editing features. Evernote 4.2 now provides iPhone users with some of the editing improvements recently added for the iPad in the last udpate, including an upgrade and redesign of the note editor and improvements to checkbox functionality. Users can now more easily access attachment features, text styling and formatting options when editing notes; a redesigned note information screen and more advanced note editing capabilities have also been added. Checkboxes can now be indented in the editor and continued simply by adding new lines after the first box.

The new version also adds support for importing images from the iOS Photo Stream and a redesigned audio recorder. New options are also available to disable automatic saving of new photos to the Camera Roll and the automatic note titling feature that was introduced in the prior update. Evernote 4.2 is a universal app requiring iOS 3.0 or later and is available from the App Store as a free download; some of the newer features and editing enhancements require iOS 5.0 or later.

Evernote For Mac Updated With Retina Graphics and New Activity Stream Feature

Evernote had released a new update for its Mac app that brings stunning Retina graphics and a new feature called Activity Stream. Version 3.2 of Evernote for Mac is available now on the web and soon in the Mac App Store.

The new Activity Stream acts as a notification hub for your Evernote account that is automatically updated within the Mac app. This latest update from Evernote also includes a few other improvements.

“Our design team has been hard at work upgrading every button, texture, shadow, and image inside of Evernote for Mac to look sharp and beautiful on the new drool-worthy MacBook Retina displays,” said Andrew Sinkov of Evernote.

Evernote’s new Activity Stream in action.

A new satellite dish icon in the Mac app shows what’s going on with the notebooks you share and have access to. Evernote is heavily used as a tool for wireless collaboration, and Activity Stream gives you the ability to see updates as they happen. Evernote accounts you work with, new edits, syncs, etc. are all visible from the new drop-down window. New notifications add a badge count to the Activity Stream icon.

“It’s important to keep in mind that the Activity View displays the most recent change that has occurred since the last time Evernote synched,” notes Sinkov. ”This means that if you have a note which was updated 10 times since the last sync, only the most recent change will appear in the Activity View.”

Notebooks that are joined to your Mac will now be automatically synced. The update also includes a “host of bug fixes and improvements, including more reliable sync, faster sharing and a number of stability enhancements.”

Evernote for Mac 3.2 is available now on the web, and the update should be in the Mac App Store soon. Evernote has provided instructions for switching the free Mac App Store version of the app to the web version for those interested.

Evernote 5 For iOS Is “Coming Soon” With Major New Redesign

Following the introduction of the new Evernote 5 design for Mac, the cloud-based note company has announced that a major redesign is coming to iOS as well, bringing a major new look along with changes that make it faster than ever to find the notes you want.

On their official blog, Evernote explains the changes:

We’ve learned a lot over the years about how people use Evernote on mobile devices. It’s all about speed. Whether you’re creating a note or browsing to one, everything needs to happen fast. Also, you want the app to easily support your preferred organization scheme. If you’re a tagger, then tags must be front-and-center. If you put everything into notebooks, then those need to be quickly accessible.

And, everything needs to be one or two taps away.

This thinking led us to completely redesign the app. We introduced Views for Notes, Notebooks, Tags, and Places. We added Quick Note buttons to let you easily create a note with a single click, and, on iPad we added a Recent Notes list to make multi-tasking easier.

I’ve sometimes found Evernote clunky to use, so I look forward to any change that makes it easier to access my data.

The new update is coming “very soon” but otherwise there’s no ETA.
