When will Siri be available for iPad 2?

With the announcement of the personal assistant Siri on the new iPhone 4S, questions have risen about the eventual availability of the application on iPad2. Most have reasoned that since both the iPhone 4S and the iPad2 share the same A5 processor, a future iOS update for the tablet could come with the same handy voice assistant from Apple.
If the Voice Control available on iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 doesn’t function on the tablets because the existing commands would be useless, the story with Siri is another. The first versions of Voice Control only allowed you to control music playback, dial phone numbers, initiate FaceTime calls and ask for information about the time or the song currently playing. Siri, however, as shown at the “Let’s talk iPhone” event, can set up Reminders and Calendar events, can look up information on Wikipedia or Wolfram Alpha, which can be very handy for iPad2 users.

Since the tablet has both a microphone and shares a processor with the new iPhone so, technically, there is no reason why Siri wouldn’t function on the tablet, since the actual work of translating the voice commands isn’t stored on the phone, but it gets offloaded to external servers and then returned back to your iPhone.

Therefore, most expect that Siri will, eventually, be brought to the iPad2 through an update to iOS 5, while it will be available for the new iPhone for at least the next six months, as previous important updates have (multitasking update on iOS 4.2 was available on iPhone 4, 3GS and iPod touch six months ahead).

Siri Successfully Ported to Jailbroken iPhone 4 and iPod touch

After numerous attempts to bring Apple’s Siri technology to older devices, a group of iOS hackers has finally succeeded, bringing a full port of Siri to jailbroken iPhone 4 devices through Cydia.

The port, called “H1Siri,” is available now to the public, and tech blog InTechBB has posted the necessary links, including a tutorial for how to install and use the port.

It’s important to note that jailbreaking does carry certain rusks, such as decreased system stability, voiding your Apple warrantee, and the possibility of temporarily (or permanently) bricking your device.

The port has been plagued by server and connection issues (while Siri on the 4S continues to work just fine), suggesting that the app is using its own proxy server rather than connecting directly to Apple’s Siri authentication servers.

Check out the below video to see the port in action, and head on over to InTechBB for more information on installing the port.
