If I remember correctly from Mr Jobs' last presentation there was mention of OS5 bringing autonomy to our devices.

that would be good,iPad is so good,i think it deserves to be more than just an extension of your computer.

Yes, with IOS5 you can set up the iPad completely from scratch without ever connecting to a PC if you want. And you are fully backed up in the iCloud. It works really well, even in beta. I upgraded b4 to b5 using a complete iCloud restore and it worked very well.
The only time you will really need a PC is if something goes wrong and you have to do a full IOS restore. That said, I have lots of stuff I want to sync in terms of movies, music, and pics, so I tend to connect to the PC quite a lot. At least I can do that over wifi sync now!

I've wondered about this also. However, I can't even imagine working in Photoshop, Lightroom, or Dreamweaver on an iPad. Perhaps in the future, computers will be smaller and flatter such as the iPad, but for right now, I need my "big rig".

Yes, the first 5GB is free. After that you need to top-up! And those with mobile.me accounts get some bonus space if they have an active subscription to make up for the fact that it is now defunct...

It's probably enough for the majority of casual users. I want to hold judgement until I see the full iCloud iTunes music service and what that may or may not mean for my storage requirements...
