    ipad-3-what-to-expect-from-the-next-generation-of-ipad

Regardless of the final release date, iPad 3 fans in the UK will most likely have to wait longer than their U.S. counterparts before they can get their hands on the much awaited tablet. Considering the previous release patterns for the iPad, in which Apple had trouble meeting the demand, a two- or even three-month release delay for the UK is likely.

    Display: Better?
Some have been disappointed with the display of the iPad 2, not because it was poorer than that of the original iPad, but simply because they expected a retina display, which eventually did not come. Now there’s hope for a retina display in the iPad 3, and this doesn’t seem too far-fetched.

    HD? AMOLED?
A HD screen for the iPad 3 is another rumor that has been around, ever since Apple required better displays from its panel makers (as reported by Digitimes in April). What’s more, Apple may even put an AMOLED display in its upcoming iPad – rumor has it that the company has been talking to Samsung about it.

    Specifications: More Power?
    CPU
Being almost certain now that the iPad 3 will have a dual-core CPU, there’s a lot of speculation about the exact type of processor the tablet will use. Some point at a new A6 CPU from Apple. However, this is unlikely if Apple launches the tablet this year; an A5 is much more likely. Note: if the iPad launches in 2012, then it may even have a quad-core CPU.

    NFC
IPhone 5 may rely on Near Field Communications (NFC) technology for synchronization with nearby Macs. If Apple is keen on NFC, then there’s no reason why the technology won’t make its appearance on the iPad 3 as well.

    128GB Storage
Finally, although the iPad 2 comes with up to 64GB for storage – satisfying most users – there are still many who want more. And their wish may well come true because flash storage is becoming every day less expensive. The iPad 3 may well have up to 128GB for storage.

First I would like to see a higher resolution display, 720p.

Second a slightly faster processor made on a smaller die process would be nice.

I wonder if any future iPads will have a USB port?

I don't think that will ever happen. Since Apple has it proprietary port only they can make the peripherals like DVI out connectors and USB connectors. It keeps people coming to them to buy accessories.

It is most interesting how the would likes are ... better resolution, more processor power, USB ports, etc. These will never win IMHO. The current resolution is great, why change a winner. It just drives cost and demands much higher graphic support with huge impact on battery life.
Long battery life is key ... this is why Ram is 512 MB, clock speed is below 1 ghz, why no USB, No Flash.

I would like a Drop Box capability ... too bad SJ couldn't buy Drop Box ... they wouldn't sell. But, iCloud is the beginning of Apple's version ...

Siri is critical to iPad2. I see much better integration with iCloud ... better camera(s) ... iOS5 added a lot ... iMessage to non-apple devices

Thicker iPad 3 slated for 2012?

Plus 4-inch screen for iPhone 5

After years of paring our smartphones and tablets down to the thinnest possible dimensions, Apple could launching a thicker iPad 3 and a larger iPhone 5 in 2012.

The iPad 3 is bulking-out reportedly so it can house a higher-resolution display than the iPad 2 and the extra girth is all down to pixel density.

As we previously reported, the higher pixel-density that Apple is apparently insisting on is going to cause some brightness issues.

Another source previously claimed that the company will add dual LED light bars to counteract this, and this new rumour that the company is increasing the slate's thickness by 0.7mm could see that hold true.

    Lite Brite

The iPad 3 release date should be around March some time (as usual), although the source reckons it "could be publicly shown as early as January". Presumably it will rock out the old 'I'm still carrying a bit of holiday weight' excuse if so.

Back to the iPhone 5, and it looks as though 8mm will be added to the handset's length in order to cater for a 4-inch screen. iLounge's source adds that it will rock a metal body unit and land in summer 2012.

That tear-drop design that we were expecting to see this October has apparently been done away with due to battery issues.

Also reportedly coming in 2012 is the MacBook Pro redesign, which should see the beefy laptops slimmed down in line with the MacBook Air range.

iLounge says this information comes from its "most reliable source" and fits fairly well with other Apple rumours that have refused to die; but we're not sure we can quite believe that Apple will deepen the iPad 3… the jury's out on this one.

On 1 July, Digitimes reported that Taiwanese-based component suppliers were gearing up for production of iPad 3. In October 2011 it was later reported that production would certainly start before the end of the year.

However, during August, a rumour broke that Apple was set to delay the launch of the iPad 3, due to a shortage of retina displays from its suppliers LG and Samsung - more on the display shortly.

Digitimes repored in late November 2011 that panel makers had already started shipping panels for the new iPad - a million in October and two million in November.

Interestingly, on 3 November 2011, DigiTimes suggested that the Spring's new iPad would, in fact, be a revised iPad 2, with a brand new iPad design due later in 2012.

The iPad 3 UK release date is a mystery

With Apple unable to meet initial demand for iPad 2, we'd expect a staggered release date for the iPad 3 too: Apple will most likely follow the pattern it has with the previous two iPad launches and have a US release first, followed by a UK release days later.

According to the Korea Times in November 2011, the A6 processors are to be manufactured by Samsung, despite the companies' ongoing patent battles.

The iPad 3 specs include a dual-core processor...

It's possible that the iPad 3 will have a brand spanking new processor, Apple's A6 - which will surely be a quad-core ARM-based processor.Quad-core designs are imminent from all ARM partners.

    iPad 3 display

A retina display was widely predicted for the iPad 2, but of course the current iPad doesn't have a double-resolution display: for now, that's something you'll only get in the iPhone 4. Could an iPad 3 Retina Display be on the way? It's the very first thing on our iPad 3 wish list.

The exciting news is that itlooks as thoughit is happening, with Apple reportedly testing suppliers' current shipments of 2048 x 1536 resolution 9.7-inch displays.

However, rumours continued over the summer and autumn of 2011 that the retina display in the iPad 3 was continuing to be a challenge.

Rumours of an HD screen on the iPad 3 gathered pace on 12 April 2011 when Digitimes reported that Apple is asking panel makers to provide screens that are capable of displaying higher image quality than the iPad 2.

Back in May 2011, we reported that the iPad 3 could launch with a Samsung-made AMOLED screen, following rumours that Apple has been in talks on the matter with Samsung execs. There have also been more LG and Samsung rumours, too.

On 15 June we reported that the iOS 5 code hinted at a Retina Display for iPad 3.

More rumours in mid-November 2011 said that Apple is looking to implement some nifty dual LED lightbar technology into the iPad 3. The reason? It's apparently in a bid to counter-balance the Apple tablet's brightness issue that it may have due to its super-high pixel density.

Will the iPad 3 have a smaller dock connector?

Parts previewed on some websites indicate that, although the iPad 3 will still have a 30 pin dock connector, the packaging is streamlined. Well, if this is true, we knew it would happen sooner or later.

The iPad 3 hardware could include an NFC chip

Apple's very interested in Near Field Communications, and one particularly tasty rumour at Cult of Mac suggests that the iPhone 5 will use NFC to take over nearby Macs, enabling you to use your data and settings with a flick of the wrist.

The iPad 3 specifications will include more storage

The iPad 2 has the familiar 16/32/64GB storage options, but as flash storage comes down in price a 128GB option for the iPad 3 isn't impossible - although that might depend on the current horrible situation in Asia, where natural disasters have caused chaos in parts of the electronics industry.

The iPad 3 features could include a Thunderbolt port

Two generations of USB-free iPads suggest that Apple just isn't interested in adding one, but the new Thunderbolt port found in the 2011 MacBook Pro and MacBook Air could be another story: it's a combined accessory/display connector with astonishingly fast performance.

iPad 3 to be a 4G LTE unit?

Cnet.com believes that the new iPad may feature a Qualcomm 4G LTE Gobi 4000 chip for next-gen connectivity.

There could be more than one iPad 3

TUAW says the iOS 5 code features new code files for USB devices in the iOS 5 firmware, Through this, TUAW found references to an iPad 3,1 and an iPad 3,2.

The iPad 3 could be thicker

The iPad 3 is bulking-out reportedly so it can house a higher-resolution display than the iPad 2 and the extra girth is all down to pixel density.

The iPad 3 could be made by someone other than Foxconn

Apple was said to be in talks with another Far Eastern manufacturer as the release of the iPad 3 nears. Digitimes says that as there was a fire at usual supplier Foxconn in May, Quanta Computer and Pegatron Technology could benefit.

On 1 August it was reported that a contract had definitely gone to Pegatron rather than Foxconn.

The iPad 3 specs might include an SD card slot

This was widely predicted for iPad 2 and, like the retina display, didn't materialise. One for version 3, perhaps? Using a separate adapter to read camera cards is rather inelegant and clunky.

The iPad 3 specification should include a better camera

The rear-facing camera on the iPad 2 isn't brilliant: an iPhone 4S-style camera and flash would do nicely.

    iPad 3 gesture controls

Could iPad 3 have Kinect-style gesture controls? We're not so sure, but rumours suggested so in late October 2011.

The iPad 3 could feature a carbon fibre case

Apple has hired a carbon fibre expert, senior composites engineer Kevin Kenney, fuelling speculation that the next iPad could be encased in the lightweight material.

iPad 3 with Retina Display and an iPad Mini 7.8″ to be Released in 2012?

Apple will release an iPad 3 with a retina display running at 2048×1536 resolution next year, and the production of the IPS QXGA display is already underway by Samsung, Sharp, and LGD, according to a new report. Citing a confident analyst from DisplaySearch, CNET quotes “It’s happening–QXGA, 2048×1536. Panel production has started“.

Talk of an iPad 3 with a retina display isn’t anything new, theoretical discussion of such hardware started before the iPad 2 was even announced in 2011, with various pieces of evidence and conjecture surfacing early on.

Current iPad 3 rumors indicate the following possibilities:

Retina Display – persistent rumors and reports suggest a high resolution display is all but guaranteed

Quad Core CPU – references to a quad-core ARM CPU were found and quickly removed from Xcode earlier in the year, igniting speculation that a quad core chip could make it to the next generation of iOS hardware

Siri – the hit AI assistant agent from iPhone 4S is likely to make it to other Apple hardware in the future, perhaps starting with iPad 3

Dual Mode CDMA/GSM Support – it’s very likely the next iPad will include the same dual mode GSM and CDMA chip from the iPhone 4S, allowing Apple to produce a single 3G equipped iPad rather than separate CDMA and GSM devices

Release Date – presumably the iPad 3 release will follow past iPad footsteps, with a release sometime around March or April of 2012

There are also some rumors suggesting the iPad 2 may stick around as a lower cost model, with the iPad 3 becoming a “Pro” addition that would turn the iPad into more of a product family. Apple offering a lower cost iPad may very well depend on the success of competing lower priced tablets, which thus far have struggled to gain traction in the marketplace.

iPad Mini with a 7.85″ Display to Debut Later in 2012?

Later in the aforementioned CNET report is a reference to an “mini iPad” that would include a 7.85″ display. Such a device would supposedly come in the second half of 2012, but only if there’s adequate market interest:

“If there’s demand there. There’s no reason they wouldn’t build a 7.85-inch iPad,” Shim said.

Demand for smaller screened tablets may end up depending on the success of the low priced Amazon Kindle Fire. A recent report indicated that Apple’s iPad maintains a dominating lead in tablet market share, but suggested the newly released Kindle Fire will place direct pressure on the iPad. Amazon’s tablet could be a motivating factor for Apple to be exploring an iPad with a smaller display.

While rumors are fascinating to ponder, it’s wise to take all Apple rumors with a grain of salt, especially considering how incredibly inaccurate and imaginative the iPhone 5 speculation ended up being. In other words, don’t believe it until it’s announced by Apple.
