iOS 6.1 jailbreak almost ready for prime time

The newly formed evad3rs are close to completing their work on the latest iOS 6.1 jailbreak. The team, made up of @MuscleNerd, @pod2g, @Planetbeing and @pimskeks, have created a website for their jailbreak and are updating it with progress reports.

According to the evasi0n site, the jailbreak is 68 percent done, with both the jailbreak apps for Mac and Windows completed. The Linux app and some testing are on their plate right now. The next step is private beta testing, which will likely be followed by another round of tweaking before the final release.

The latest rumor suggests the team will be ready to roll out the jailbreak on Super Bowl Sunday.

iOS 6.1 Evasi0n Jailbreak Software Is Ready For Mac And Windows

Following on from the release of iOS 6.1, a team known as Evad3rs has confirmed that they now have a jailbreak, called Evasi0n, ready for Mac and Windows systems. The information comes from the site evasi0n.com, which was set up by hacking team Evad3rs, that includes MuscleNerd and pod2g. According to the site, the software for Mac and Windows has already been completed and only some testing and development for Linux systems remains.

When the Evasi0n jailbreak is released, it will apparently enable users running iOS 6.0 through iOS 6.1 to jailbreak their iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini devices. The team teased that the jailbreak could be ready as soon as this Sunday but there has been no official announcement on the matter as yet.

Forthcoming jailbreak for iOS 6.x gets name, website

A "supergroup" of well-known iOS hackers now called the Evad3rs have launched an official website to promote the team's jailbreak for a wide variety of iOS devices running iOS 6 or 6.1, the latter of which was just released on Monday. The jailbreak should enable most recent iOS devices to be able to further customized and let users install apps unavailable from the official App Store -- but as with any jailbreak, the exploit required for it to work could be used for pirating and malware as well.

Jailbreaking is not illegal, and most users who choose to engage in the option do so for the ability to run apps available through Cydia and other repositories that offer features Apple or other legitimate developers have chosen not to make available -- anything from an easier way to turn Bluetooth on and off to apps that feature adult content. Some use the jailbreak to illegally pirate apps -- though two of the main sources of pirated apps closed not long ago, perhaps due to the pressure from authorities, developers and Apple.

The Evad3rs include names such as pod2g, planetbeing, pimskeks and musclenerd, the latter of which has acted as the group's spokesperson. Running the jailbreak -- which is scheduled to be released on Sunday, February 3, though a post from planetbeing suggests that the team is not tied to a particular date -- requires connecting the iOS device to a Mac or PC (running OS X 10.5 or later or Windows XP or later, respectively). The jailbreak will work on older devices running iOS 6.x, including the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. Essentially, any iPhone or iPad that can run iOS 6 is eligible.

The jailbreak is said to take only five minutes, but the team has not said anything about the possibility of an unlocking solution for those who can't get their carriers to unlock their devices. Unlocking without carrier permission is now illegal in the United States, but other countries have not addressed the issue or do not consider it illegal.

iOS 6 ‘evasi0n’ Untethered Jailbreak Set for Sunday Launch, Will Support All Current

The long-anticipated untethered iOS 6/6.1 jailbreak has officially been named evasi0n, and the jailbreak’s development team has now launched a new website to provide status updates leading up to the release. The site also hints at the previously rumored Superbowl Sunday release date for the jailbreak, with the calendar on all of the iOS devices in the site’s header image set to February 3rd:

According to the latest update, the jailbreak tool is now complete for Mac and iOS, with a linux version and some last-minute testing remaining as the only obstacles preventing a public release. According to the website, the jailbreak will require only 5 minutes to apply, and as previously noted, will support all current iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and iPad mini models (provided that they are running iOS 6 or later).

How Far We’ve Come: The Original iPhone Jailbreak Took 74 Steps

Jailbreaking has come a long way since the dark ages of the original iPhone. Now it’s a simple matter of plugging your iOS device into your computer for five minutes and following a few easy steps. But it used to be way more complex.

Let’s rewind to 2007, back when only a handful of hackers were tweaking and unlocking their iPhones and iPod touches. It took 74 individual steps to jailbreak the original iPhone OS.

“Jailbreaks for the iPod touch first surfaced a month after the first model was released in September 2007, when hackers released JailbreakMe 1.0 (also called “AppSnapp”) to jailbreak iPhone OS 1.1.1.,” according to Wikipedia. Once you jailbreak, you can install apps and system-level tweaks that Apple doesn’t allow in the App Store.

Today I stumbled across this interesting MacRumors forum thread from 2007. It details each step for performing the first public jailbreak. The poster said, “Hey all, I take NO CREDIT for this guide, I followed it on the #itouch irc channel from the amazing planetbeing!” An IRC channel is an online chat room were hackers and coders collaborate. Planetbeing is the same hacker who is currently spearheading the impending iOS 6.1 jailbreak.

The tutorial is full of tedious terminal commands and SSH-related steps that would make most jailbreakers give up and walk away today. An except:

    34. Rename “chmod” in the iPhuc folder to “update”.
    35. In iPhuc, “putfile update”, so you’re replacing /usr/sbin/update
    with chmod.
    36. “cd /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/”
    37. “getfile com.apple.update.plist”
    38. Open com.apple.update.plist in a text editor

Right after it says <string>/usr/sbin/update</string> add:
    <string>555</string>
    <string>/bin/chmod</string>
    <string>/bin/sh</string>
    <string>/usr/bin/dropbear</string>
    39. Save the file. Upload the modified version with “putfilecom.apple.update.plist”
    40. Also, “putfile au.asn.ucc.matt.dropbear.plist”
    41. Reboot the iPod twice. The first reboot should set the required permissions. The second should start the ssh server (since proper permissions are now set). And close iPhuc.
For comparison, the last major public jailbreak for the iPhone 4S looked like this:

The next jailbreak tool for iOS 6.1, named evasi0n, looks to be the most simplistic and clean method of jailbreaking yet. It’s slated to drop within the next few days.

The iOS 6.1 Untethered Jailbreak Will Be Officially Released Monday, February 4

Despite rampant speculation that the official iOS 6.1 untethered jailbreak would be released on Sunday, February 3rd, it won’t actually be made available to the public until Monday, February 4th. The jailbreak is called Evasi0n, and it will be compatible with all iOS devices capable of running iOS 6.0-6.1. including the iPhone 5 and iPad mini.

The Evad3rs, a group of four hackers who have developed past jailbreaks, have been testing compatibility with different devices and iOS versions over the past few days. Compatibility tests have been successful, and the jailbreak is complete and nearly ready for public release.

Before you jailbreak your iOS device tomorrow, make sure to follow our guide on how to prepare. We’ll let you know as soon as the iOS 6.1 jailbreak drops. It’s only a matter of hours away!
