AT&T Unleashes New iPhone App for Cheap International Calls

AT&T is offering a new app – one that allows all iPhone (and some Android and BlackBerry) users to make reasonably priced international calls via VoIP.

The app, called AT&T Call International, is free and has been specially designed to let wireless users in the U.S. make inexpensive international long distance calls with their iPhones. The service uses your existing wireless service, and you can actually use is when you’re overseas and connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The app provides simple, step-by-step instructions to establish an AT&T Call International account. Once established, costumers can immediately make international calls through the app by either dialing directly or by accessing their existing contact list. All calls are billed directly to the customer’s credit card.

AT&T VoIP app works on selected Android and BlackBerry models too. Some Android models can place Wi-Fi calls internationally. Calling rates vary by country. The AT&T Call International app allows for calling to more than 220 countries.

Here are some features that costumers can enjoy when using the new app:

    1. No monthly recurring charges, hidden call fees or packages of minutes to purchase
    2. No special codes of PINs needed to place a call. Dial family and friends directly from your iPhone’s contact list.
    3. Online account management includes prior statements and near real-time call billing.

It is an interesting move for AT&T to allow international calling to a wide range of users via VoIP. It shows that even the big boys can get into the VoIP market and offer cheap mobile calls overseas. All in all, the service sounds like it may be a bargain for those who want to use their iPhones to make a lot of international calls.
