Verizon to launch 4G LTE in 27 new markets, expand in 44 this week

AT&T announced on Thursday that it has expanded its high-speed 4G long-term evolution network to 11 new cities, including the New York metropolitan area, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

AT&T's 4G LTE is now available in a total of 26 markets to 74 million customers. The announcement was made Thursday by John Stankey, president and chief executive officer of AT&T Business Solutions at Citi's 22nd Annual Global Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications Conference in San Francisco, Calif. The full list of 4G LTE markets recently added are:

    New York City metro area
    Austin, Tex.
    Chapel Hill, N.C.
    Los Angeles, Calif.
    Oakland, Calif.
    Orlando, Fla.
    Phoenix, Ariz.
    Raleigh, N.C.
    San Diego, Calif.
    San Francisco, Calif.
    San Jose, Calif

"We're building a 4G LTE network that's blazing fast, and we offer dual layers of 4G technologies to provide customers with a more consistent speed experience," Stankey said. "Our network, together with our unsurpassed 4G device portfolio and innovative applications, will give our customers an industry-leading mobile broadband experience."

The latest expansion joins 15 markets that AT&T brought 4G LTE to in 2011. They are Athens, Ga.; Atlanta, Ga.; Baltimore, Md.; Boston, Mass.; Chicago, Ill.; Dallas-Fort Worth, Tex.; Houston, Tex.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Kansas City, Kan.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; San Antonio, Tex.; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Washington D.C.

The roll-out of AT&T's LTE network has been much slower than rival Verizon, which which debuted its fourth-generation high-speed network in December of 2010 in 38 metropolitan areas and more than 60 commercial airports across the U.S. Verizon's 4G network currently covers more than 186 million Americans, while AT&T's is available to 74 million.

Speculation has suggested that 4G LTE markets and related technology in phones will be mature enough this year that Apple could offer an LTE-capable iPhone model. Last year, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said poor battery life and other issues with current LTE technology were not up to standard.

"The first generation of LTE chipsets force a lot of design compromises with the handset," Cook said last April, "and some of those we are just not willing to make."

"Verizon Wireless 4G LTE is the premier wireless data service in the nation, with more than six times the geographic coverage of our nearest competitor's 4G LTE network and now available to more than two-thirds of the nation’s population," said David Small, chief technical officer of Verizon Wireless. "We will continue to introduce new markets and expand covered markets to ensure even more wireless users across the United States can take advantage of the benefits that 4G LTE brings to consumers, small businesses and enterprises."

AT&T Continues Its 4G LTE Rollout, Lights Up Three New Cities

Continuing with their 12 city rollout, AT&T has added three new cities to the LTE club today. Those living in Akron, Ohio; Canton, Ohio; and Lafayette, Ind will now be able to take advantage of the fantastic speeds LTE has to offer. While AT&T doesn’t come close to having the LTE coverage that Verizon does, they certainly have the speed — as shown by
    PC World’s independent testing.

AT&T is more than halfway through their promised rollout and after today, the only markets remaining in the 12 market rollout include:

    Cleveland, Ohio

    Naples, Fla.

    Baton Rouge, La.

    New Orleans, La.

Of course you’re going to need an LTE device to take advantage of these speeds, so if you’re in the market, AT&T currently offers the Pantech Element, Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Samsung Galaxy Note, LG Nitro HD and HTC Vivid. So has your city been blessed by AT&T 4G LTE yet? How are you enjoying the new speeds?

Cleveland Rocking Faster Than Ever Thanks To AT&T 4G LTE

AT&T has unleashed its 4G LTE fury upon the city of Cleveland, and its citizens are ready to Rock ‘n’ Roll. It continues to be a slow rollout for AT&T, but every little bit counts if you’re a customer. If you’ve already jumped ship over to Verizon, then you probably won’t care, but if you’re still an AT&T faithful living in Cleveland, you’ll know be able to enjoy:

Faster speeds – LTE technology is capable of delivering mobile Internet speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G. Customers can stream, download, upload and game faster than ever before.

Cool new devices – AT&T offers several LTE-compatible devices, including new AT&T 4G LTE smartphones and tablets, such as the HTC One™ X, Samsung Focus® 2, Nokia Lumia 900, Samsung Galaxy Note™, and Pantech Element™ tablet.

Faster response time – LTE technology offers lower latency, or the processing time it takes to move data through a network, such as how long it takes to start downloading a webpage or file once you’ve sent the request. Lower latency helps to improve services like mobile gaming, two-way video calling and telemedicine.

More efficient use of spectrum – Wireless spectrum is a finite resource, and LTE uses spectrum more efficiently than other technologies, creating more space to carry data traffic and services and to deliver a better network experience.

We’re surprised to only see one city added to the list but it’s still early in the day, so we could still see a couple more added before day’s end. Enjoy those new speeds Cleveland!
