Cheap charger broke iphone 5 ?

This is complicated so I'll try keep it a simple a possible, I hope someone can help.

My boss had an iphone 5 and used a cheap charger on it. When he picked up the phone later is was very hot. It worked for a few days then stopped working.

He claimed a new phone on insurance and gave the old phone to me after a few months.

I figure a new battery would solve the issue and it did temporarily but when I went back to the phone the next day it wouldn't switch on again.

I got a new battery again and it worked and charged again but shut itself off while i wasn't looking and wont come on again.

Is anyone familiar with this problem ? is the motherboard broken ?

Why not send it to the service shop to fix it? It's hard to identify the problem since I cannot see it!
