iTunes adds Beats Music to ‘Apps Made by Apple’ Section

Beats Music is now the first app to greet iOS users browsing the ‘Apps Made by Apple’ section of the App Store, giving the streaming music prime real estate on iTunes that should help it reel in more users than ever.

iTunes added the Beats Music app to its list of homegrown apps today that can be found on both the iOS App Store and iTunes desktop, placing it at the top of the featured list that also includes Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and more.

Apple’s $3 billion acquisition of Beats was finalized at the beginning of August, and Tim Cook welcomed Dr. Dre to the team by challenging him to an ice bucket video throw down (because we know the doctor loves making videos). Apple has also moved sales of all Beats headphones over to the Online Apple Store.

Beats Music’s inclusion on the Apps Made by Apple list is also exceptional in that it’s the only app that requires a monthly subscription. The app is free to download and try for two weeks before you decide to pay the $9.99 per month fee. GarageBand is the only other app that even offers in-app purchases, as Apple made all of the iLife and iWork apps for iOS free with the purchase of an iOS 7 device.

Even though Beats Music is now owned by Apple, the developer information still lists Beats Music, LLC. as the seller. It’s been rumored that Apple plans to keep Beats Music around as a separate app from the iOS Music app, however, Apple recently tapped Beats Music CEO, Ian Rogers to oversee iTunes Radio as well, signaling a potential merger of the two services.

Apple in talks with music labels to reduce Beats Music streaming fees, report says

According to a report on Thursday, Apple is in talks with major music labels over content licensing price cuts to be applied to Beats Music, which could result in subscription fee drops some time next year.

Citing people familiar with the talks, Re/code reports talks are in very early stages, but Apple is requesting a "new set of rights and features" from music labels ahead of a Beats Music refresh some time in 2015.

While details of the new feature set remain unknown, the publication says Apple is pushing for lower content licensing fees that would allow Beats to charge less than the current $10 per month going rate.

The music industry has been opposed to releasing content to for-pay streaming services like Spotify, but market shifts toward free streaming options have proven difficult for the sector. As noted by Re/code, digital download sales are going the way of the CD, while streaming music revenue is up. Due to the nature of streaming platforms, it is unclear whether the dip in downloads can be attributed to free streaming or subscription services.

A rumor earlier this month claimed Apple was planning to shut down Beats Music and roll the service into iTunes Radio. But the speculation was quickly debunked by Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr, who said the company has no such plans. Neumayr did not comment on the possibility of a rebranding, which some say could happen in the coming months.
