Problem with MXL 990 Virtual Preamp

I purchased an MXL 990 USB March 25 . I am using it on an iMac running OSX 10.9.2 and Logic Express 9.1.8 software (I also tried Garage Band). I downloaded and installed the Virtual Preamp software from the MXL Web site. The popup with the volume fader is there, but the fader has no effect whatsoever on the input level. I selected "MXL 990 USB" as the input source in Preferences. However, the manual for the Virtual Preamp shows "USB Audio CODEC", and "The selected device has no input controls". In my Preferences, the input volume for MXL 990 USB is set by the "Input volume" slider. The choices are:
    Internal microphone Built-in
    Line In Audio line-in port
    MXL 990 USB USB

IOW, there is no "USB Audio CODEC" to choose.
I downloaded MXL990USB(MAC).dmg and ran it, then re-started my computer. The software is there, the window pops up with the fader, but the fader has NO EFFECT. I have to change the input sensitivity via the Mac Preferences.

I'm sure my MXL 990 USB was plugged into a USB port when I installed the Virtual Preamp software. I have sent an e-mail to MXL, but no reply.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Well, I got a reply from MXL to wit:
"Our MXL 990 USB Preamp is only compatible with Windows XP as all other operating systems allow you to adjust the volume manually.

Go ahead and select the 990 USB from your input choices and adjust the gain from there. That should do the trick. Let me know if that helps. "

I am skeptical of this reply, because why would they have a Mac download of the software and instructions for using it on the Mac if it were only for Windows XP? The reply also implies that the "Product Specialist" didn't read my e-mail carefully, because I stated that the mic worked with the Mac driver.

Has anyone else tried to use this?
    Thanks,
