Reports claim Apple will reveal new MacBooks at WWDC

Reports expect Apple to update its MacBook lineup at the upcoming WWDC event beginning 10 June, with the Cupertino-based company to integrate Intel’s next-generation processors into its laptops.

According to Apple Insider, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple is “likely to bump its current MacBook lineup to Intel’s latest platform,” however “speculated upgrades like a MacBook Air with Retina display are unlikely.”

Intel has confirmed its latest, fourth-generation core processors, dubbed ‘Haswell’, will be launched on 3 June. With Apple’s eight-year relationship with Intel – after Steve Jobs announced the shift away from PowerPC microprocessors at WWDC in 2005 – speculation has put the two launches together.

Kuo, in the Apple Insider report believes Apple will continue the non-Retina display MacBook range, while also keeping the optical drive equipped Macs.

“There is still demand in emerging markets, where internet penetration isn’t advanced, for optical disk drives,” Kuo said.

Apple unveiled the 15in MacBook Pro with Retina display at WWDC last year, alongside iOS 6 and an in-depth look at OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

The company is set to provide developers a peek at its next-generation OS X and iOS operating systems in June.
