Apple's Handoff brings proximity awareness to your devices

Apple has unveiled technology designed to better help you juggle emails, phone calls, text messages, and other items among your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Dubbed Handoff, the new feature demonstrated at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday as part of OS X Yosemite, brings proximity awareness to your Apple devices. As an example, let's say you're writing an email on your iPhone and you venture to your Mac. Your computer will notice what you're doing and prompt you, giving you the option to finish writing the email on the Mac.

The technology naturally works in the other direction as well. You may be writing an email on your Mac at your desk and want to finish it on your iPhone. Simply make sure the two are in proximity to each other, and your iPhone will allow you to pick up where you left off on your Mac.

But the devices don't have to be right next to each other. Handoff will work even if you're in front of your Mac and your iPhone is across the room tucked in your handbag, according to Apple.

Handoff also can handle phone calls. Receive a call on your iPhone, and your Mac will display a caller ID and even perform double-duty as a speaker phone. You can make a phone call via a website link on your Mac and tap into your iPhone's phone service. Further, text messages sent to your phone can automatically be relayed to your Mac.

Of course, Handoff benefits Apple as well as its users by deepening the integration between OS X and iOS, potentially convincing more people to buy into the entire Apple ecosystem.

Handoff will debut as part of OS X Yosemite, a free upgrade for OS X users due out this fall.

I'd love one, but no, I'll probably run with a Mac Mini once it gets a refresh.

If you think about it, the mini is a very stout piece of equipment for its size.

Hereís all 24 new dictation languages arriving in iOS 8 & OS X Yosemite

During its unveiling of iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 Yosemite yesterday, Apple mentioned that itís adding 24 new dictation languages, but it didnít specify what those languages would be. Dictation, a feature available on both iOS and OS X, uses speech-to-text technology powered by Nuance to let users input text using only their voice rather than a keyboard or touchscreen.

Apple has gone from just 8 languages (with a few variations for some) to over 30 in Yosemite. In case youíre curious if your language will make the cut by the time the new operating systems are released this fall, below weíve included a full list of new supported languages and variations by country:

    Arabic
    - Saudi Arabia
    Catalan
    - Spain
    Croatian
    - Croatia
    Czech
    - Czech Republic
    Danish
    - Denmark
    Dutch
    - Netherlands
    Finnish
    - Finland
    Greek
    - Greece
    Hebrew
    - Israel
    Hungarian
    - Hungary
    Indonesian
    - Indonesia
    Malay
    - Malaysia
    Norwegian Bokmal
    - Norway
    Polish
    - Poland
    Portuguese
    - Brazil
    - Portugal
    Romanian
    - Romania
    Russian
    - Russia
    Slovak
    - Slovakia
    Swedish
    - Sweden
    Thai
    - Thailand
    Turkish
    - Turkey
    Ukrainian
    - Ukraine
    Vietnamese
    - Vietnam

Thereís actually 23 languages listed, but it appears Apple is counting variations of Portuguese for Brazil and Portugal as two new languages. Apple also announced yesterday that itís adding Indian, Tagalog, Irish Gaelic, and Slovenian keyboards as well as new definition dictionaries for Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Thai, and Turkish Hindi localization.

Two of the great updated features in OS X Yosemite are improved versions of both Notification Center and Spotlight, both of which have become staples on OS X. Both of these features have received substantial updates, dropping their old user interfaces entirely, and gaining quite a few new features.

In this video, weíll take you on a little tour of the new interfaces and their features.

OS X Yosemite Brings HMTL5 Video Support for Netflix

During yesterday's WWDC keynote, Apple announced several improvements to Safari in OS X Yosemite, including HTML5 video support for Netflix. According to Apple, the improvements bring an extra two hours of video watching under a single battery charge when streaming Netflix video with Yosemite.

Netflix today confirmed that it supports HTML5 video streaming on Safari in OS X Yosemite, explaining that it has worked closely with Apple to implement Premium Video Extensions in Safari. The extensions allow playback of video content in the browser without using plugins like Microsoft's Silverlight.

We're especially excited that Apple implemented the Media Source Extensions (MSE) using their highly optimized video pipeline on OS X. This lets you watch Netflix in buttery smooth 1080p without hogging your CPU or draining your battery. In fact, this allows you to get up to 2 hours longer battery life on a MacBook Air streaming Netflix in 1080p - that's enough time for one more movie!

Netflix's plugin-free video is currently available to all OS X Yosemite users who have installed the beta. OS X Yosemite will be released to the public this fall.

The Mac's Finder icon gets its first real facelift with OS X Yosemite

The two-face icon for Finder on Mac dates back to the early days of Mac OS, and at this point I think we've all just assumed that it will pretty much always be around. Sure, it's gotten a few tweaks over the years -- with the addition of color and a new glossy appearance -- but the shape and layout of the icon has remained identical to when it originally debuted.

But with OS X Yosemite, the funky face gets a totally new lease on life. Ditching the strike-through slashes at the top and bottom of the original icon, rounding off all the sharp edges and widening the mouth itself. It's an overall more spunky and happy image, and for an icon that has been around for almost 18 years, it's an update that is probably long overdue.
