    How To Load an OS?

My son purchased a used MacBook Pro for his teenage daughter, but the hard disk was wiped clean and theere was no OS partition. The seller indicated that the OS was Yosemite. My son has tried to log in with his Apple account, to no avail. Apple tech support insists that the only OS downloadable at this time is El Capitan, but the OS is tied to a machine serial number and without that Yosemite partition it cannot be downloaded. I am certianly not even a 'novice' Apple user but can't fathom there's no way to download an OS (including paying), or is Apple so over-controlled that for all intents and purposes this resale MacBook Pro can never have a legit OS?

Does the machine have a DVD drive? You may be able to purchase a Snow Leopard DVD from eBay or somewhere similar. If it doesn't have a DVD drive, the later OS Lion and Mountain Lion were issued on USB drives, so you may be able to source one of these from somewhere.

Just looked on Amazon....looks like you can possibly get a USB stick of Lion from there. Once you have Lion installed, you can upgrade to Yosemite via the App Store.
