Getting bored with the current crop of wallpapers scattered across the backgrounds of your various Macs, PC’s and iOS devices? You’re in the right place. We’ve gathered a great collection of ultra-high resolution stunning images from NASA, Hubble, and National Geographic that encompass some crazy pictures from space to equally surreal photos on our own planet earth, and they’re sure to look great on just about any display you throw them on, whether it’s a Retina Mac or iPad.

A few quick notes: the pictures hosted on National Geographic are not direct image links, you have to choose the resolution on their landing page for the device you want to decorate. For the highest resolution image that NatGeo offers, choose the “Desktop” option, then you can scale it down (or up) to whatever device you see fit. Also, the pictures hosted by NASA can sometimes be ginormous, like 8000×8000 pixel JPG files, which is wonderful if you’re looking to stretch them across multiple monitors or decorate a retina display, but it’s a bit overkill for something like the iPhone screen, so you may want to save them all in a folder then take a moment to batch resize them using Preview to a resolutio that is appropriate for your needs. Ok enough chat, let’s get to the good stuff…

9 Awesome Wave Wallpapers to Decorate Backgrounds Like an Apple Product Shot

Apple has long had a love affair with including incredible ocean and wave imagery into their product shots. They’ve been doing it for years, with some stunning wave and surf photography featured prominently on the screens of Macs, whether it’s from the old PowerBook days, to even right now on Apple.com with the iMac, Retina MacBook Pro, and iPad Mini. Clearly there are some people at Apple who love the ocean – who doesn’t? – and there are even a few wave shots tucked away in OS X.

That brings us to this post, where we’re featuring a handful of beautiful high-resolution wave shots that could come right out of Apple product shots. This was inspired by a large amount of reader inquiries about the wave wallpaper used as the background in some recent articles and their respective screenshots of an ocean wave framing Tahiti. Whether you have an interest in ocean sports or not, you should find a wallpaper or two that tickles your desktop or homescreen.

Mountain Lion includes a set of 44 beautiful screensaver images in stunning 3200×2000 resolution, ideal for use as wallpaper on Retina MacBook Pros, Thunderbolt Displays and larger Cinema Displays.

Getting access to the images to use as wallpaper takes just a few seconds. Instructions follow…

    Via OSXDaily:

In the Finder, from the Go menu select Go to folder… (or hit CMD-Shift-G).

In the box that opens up, paste in this:

    /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.Framework/Versions/A/Resources/Default Collections/

That will open up the folder where the screensaver images are stored. Hit CMD-A to select all of them, then CMD-C to copy. Now open or create the folder where you’d like to store the wallpaper and hit CMD-V to paste in the copies.

Then simply right-click the photo you’d like to use as your wallpaper and select Set Desktop Picture.

9 Magnificent Wallpapers to Spruce Up Your Desktop & Home Screen Backgrounds

It’s time for another roundup of beautiful wallpapers for your computers and iDevices. There’s no particular theme with this roundup, just some great images of scenery and distant space, each of which makes for fantastic background pictures. As usual, these are all offered in high-res HD glory, so whether you’re sporting a 27″ display with a huge resolution or just a retina iPad, they will all look great. Enjoy!

(Quick note, some of these are hosted on InterfaceLift which require you to specify a resolution to download, this is necessary because they prevent direct linking to the higher resolution images)

8 Beautiful New Wallpapers from the Latest OS X Mavericks Developer Preview

Each new version of OS X and iOS tends to come with some gorgeous new wallpapers, and it looks as if OS X Mavericks will be no different. Found in the latest Developer Preview 7 build of OS X Mavericks by a member of iClarified, this collection of 8 beautiful wallpapers are offered at an absolute whopper resolution of 5120×2880 (a resolution that, conveniently, would be the equivalent of a Thunderbolt or iMac 27″ with a 2x retina display).

These are hosted on a third parties Dropbox account IMGUR and iClarified, so click through each thumbnail to be able to access the full resolution image.

Technically, there are 9 new wallpapers in Mavericks thus far, the last being the Mavericks wave that first surfaced some months ago with the first Developer Preview build of OS X 10.9.

If these aren’t doing it for you, check out our wallpaper roundups archives.
