Will upgrading to Mtn Lion resolve Snow Leopard trash error 8003?
Hello,
I have a late 2007 iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I made a typical newbie mistake and tried to delete Time Machine backup files from Finder because my external hard drive was almost full. I now have the trash error code 8003. I have been reading through this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread...art=0&tstart=0 about how to resolve the issue. I am not the most technically savvy, but when given specific instructions can usually do ok.
My question is this... rather than reinstall Snow Leopard, as seems to be a common suggestion, if I simply upgrade to Mtn Lion will that resolve the issue? Should I just upgrade through the App Store or am I better off doing a "clean install" of Mtn Lion?
Thank you in advance for any help!

When you empty the Trash on your Mac, do you get Finder Error -8003??
Usually it is a empty trash problem with Time Machine, or
If so, try this,
Close down all applications.
Go to your Applications folder.
Go to the Utilities folder.
Open Terminal.
In Terminal, type sudo bash and press Enter.
You will need to enter your password and press Enter.
It won’t show any characters when you type.
If you do not have a password then set one first.
Copy and paste the following into the Terminal window and press Enter:
sudo rm -rfv /.Trashes/*
sudo rm -rfv ~/.Trash/*
sudo rm -rfv /Volumes/*/.Trashes/*
kilall Terminal
The Terminal window will close once it has finished.
I have seen this work as well: Source
Good luck, and let me know if you need further help on this matter.

It doesn't say Finder Error. Not sure if that matters. It's a Trash error that says "the operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code - 8003)". I'm assuming if it's an empty trash problem with Time Machine, then just upgrading to Mtn Lion won't resolve the issue, correct? Because I'm wanting to upgrade anyway and was hoping that would resolve the trash error.

Humm..
Option+Empty, Option+Secure Empty Trash, after using Disk Utility to repair permissions, did you try that??
Did you use the Finder to delete some Time Machine Backups?
Choose "Secure Empty Trash" from the Finder menu to remove these items without the errors?
Also. ALT+option key while clickling on emptying the trash?
One of the last choices I would do w/o actually seeing it myself would be to go here and read up: Source
Other than that, clean-re-install??
Anybody else have any suggestions out here??
I never ran across that long of a jump, usually I'm right up to date on s/w.

I am Assuming as well downing a clean install will take care of the issue at hand, but, I've read
elsewhere sometimes even that did not go as planned and had to be re loaded more than once..

Thank you. This seems to have worked for the most part. I still have 2 files that won't delete, but at least now when I add new files to the trash they will delete.

Another way that may also take out the rest of the files, is some programs do not have the permissions to shut down or are running.
Find a program to empty.
Unlock padlock.
Look in the finder and see usually the lower right,
If it's on read only, re-check it to read and write.
Right click.
Hold command and control while right clicking mouse, or, Command, over trash..
I only know of 1 other idea, so I hope this will take the rest of the trash out for ya.

UPDATE: After following your instructions above everything seems to be functioning again as normal. At first there were 2 more files that wouldn't delete, but those eventually deleted as well and now the trash empties just fine.
I appreciate the help!
