Thank goodness Yptcn I thought I was going mad and hadn't done something right, because I have seen pictures showing it. I was even going to post the pic today. As you saw in my post I didn't get notified of an app update. Are we going to have to check all the time manually for software updates now.....:(

I just found something and will try to explain (My computer is in French..)
When you go to App Store Help , there is a
:" If you disactivate Spotlight in your Startup volume , no update will show"
So , I have added it in my things to open on start up and now I'm waiting to see if a red dot shows on the Appstore icon in the Dock next time there is an update.
But MAS still does not show up in Notification prefs.
I have tried to post a screen shot ;-))))
If you click on it it will be bigger ....but still in French !

I do have update showing on the dock icon. I had a 1 showing today but still not in Notification Centre. When I'm in the AppStore I don't have to put password in anymore just have to click update and it's done. And while it's installing it says it's checking for updates. So it must be partly working. I must get App store to open at login and see if that helps. But it would be nice to have it appear in Notifications :(((

I don't seem to have update showing on the Dock icon . I've put it to open at login like you suggested , so we'll see next time.
Apple care says that Spotlight has nothing to do with it and that it is active by default .
I read somewhere that OSX 10.8.1 had been sent to developers , who knows , maybe it's in there !
