Mac address book ( Contacts ) adding last name by itself

For family and close friends ,I like to have only the first name showing but each time I get an email from one of them the second is added automatically and that has bugged me for years ;-)

I tried adding a "." in family name , which worked fine but was not aesthetic to my taste ...

Until yesterday , when a friend told me to use this :

nbsp (option + space) as the last name

Now , please don't ask me to explain this ... one of the experts here will hopefully chime in and do so !

All I know is that it works
