The Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.01 . Finally

It used to be that Mac owners had to wait for an OS update to get RAW support for their new cameras. This — of course — meant a long wait. Now they pop out whenever they're needed, and you don't even have to restart your Mac.

It's like we're living in the future and, with Marty McFly arriving on his hover-board in just three years from now, that's exactly how it should be.

Got one of these cameras? Then you can finally see your thumbnails in the Finder, and edit pictures in Aperture and iPhoto. If you use Adobe Lightroom, you're probably snickering to yourself right now.

    Canon EOS M
    Canon PowerShot G15
    Canon PowerShot S110
    Canon PowerShot SX50 HS
    Nikon D600
    Nikon 1 J2
    Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ200
    Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G5
    Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX7
    Sony Alpha NEX-F3
    Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100

Once installed (it should show up in the Mountain Lion App Store as a software update), then you may have to right-click on your images in Aperture and choose to “reprocess originals.”

Apple Releases RAW Compatibility Update for New Sony and Olympus Digital Cameras

Apple released a new Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update this week, version 4.0.2, adding RAW image support for a variety of recent cameras, including the new Sony NEX-5R and Sony NEX-6, to their iPhoto and Aperture image editing software.

From Apple’s support document for the update:

Digital camera RAW formats retain more image information than JPEGs and can produce better results when used with imaging applications such as Aperture and iPhoto.

OS X Mountain Lion provides system-level support for digital camera RAW formats from the following cameras. Note: To install Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Updates, you may need certain versions of Aperture or iPhoto already installed on your Mac.

Supported by Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.02*

    Nikon COOLPIX P7700
    Olympus PEN E-PL5
    Olympus PEN E-PM2
    Olympus STYLUS XZ-2

Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 4.02 weighs in at just 5.06MB, and is available immediately through Software Update for users of iPhoto ’11 and Aperture 3, as well as for direct download from Apple’s support site.
