Need some help, running slow 10.6.8

I am not sure what is going on, my MacBook Pro keeps bogging down doing basic tasks. The activity monitor spikes like crazy at times, and it is usually the Internet browser that is using the most resources. I removed fire fox, tried chrome, removed it, even Safari does the same thing.

I have also run everything in disk utility.

It gets to the point where I have to power off the computer. I did a Time Machine restore, but it is still acting up.

It has only started over the last few days, and starts acting up within minutes of starting the computer. I'm not sure is a clean install of the OS would help, but it's the only thing I've not tried.

I really am confused by this, I've had no issues until a few days ago...

OK, when you say Activity Monitor is saying that it's browsers slowing things down, what exactly is it about their activity that is causing the glitch? I am guessing they are hogging CPU time for some reason, but it may be disk activity or memory issues....Activity Monitor can tell you all this if you have a play around with it.
