mid 2011 macbook air. can I get 1920 x 1080 resolution for airplay?

I am trying to mirror to an appleTV3 from a mid-2011 MBA. When I try to airplay mirror on the macbook air, the resolution, which is set for "best for airplay", does not fill the screen of my TV as the MBA selects a 720P display resolution. When I choose "scaled" for resolutions on the MBA, there is no option for 1920x1080. Is there a way to get this resolution so that I can mirror full-screen to my 1080P apple TV?

Of course the other variable in this equation is what your TV is actually capable of displaying...you may have to tweak some of the settings on that too.

The TV displays 1080P. It will also do 720P, but with the ATV3 hooked up to it, it is always at 1080P resolution. The Macbook Air's native resolution is 1440x900, in-between 720P and 1080P. When selecting "best for airplay" in the mirroring options, the resolution drops to 720P. In the scaled resolutions list there is no 1080P option. Considering that the ATV3 is 1080P and sending a 1080P signal to my 1080P TV, this is not an issue with my TV. It is either an issue with the AppleTV or with the Macbook Air. I think it would work if the Macbook Air would give me the option to do airplay mirroring at 1080P.

Well, if there isn't an option to stream at 1080P then you are probably out of luck. This will be an issue with the MacBook Airplay software, presumably to give optimum performance over a wireless connection. Can you get your content into iTunes, which is capable of streaming HD content?

The issue is probably with the MacBook Air because it has the most control over variables. But what gets me is that even at 720p you still could fill the screen like all set top boxes do. Most tv providers send their signal at 720p tops and you always get full screen.
