Question Why does my Macbook use up so much ram?

15" retina Macbook Pro with 8 gigs of ram. Yosemite OS. The only thing open is Safari with 2 tabs and Dr. Cleaner running in the background. It says I only have 407.5 MB's free.
So what is eating up over 7 gigs of data? I can clean it and free up some but just browsing some sites with a couple tabs open, it will soon start eating it all up again, same if I reboot as well. Sometimes my computer gets a little slow and some things may jitter a bit instead of flow smoothly.

Is there a program like System Mechanic Pro for Windows that I can scan for problems?

Go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and click on the Memory tab. This will show all the open and background apps and processes currently running, so should be able to see what is sucking up all your RAM.
