    You can connect an external HD via USB-C which will be as fast as your internal HD using a USB-C adaptor. Of course that depends on your MBP model.
    If you have an earlier model then USB 3 or FireWire connections will be best.
    If you are running out of space then generally the rule is to keep applications on your internal drive and the data they create on an external drive but this method requires backup as do all data storage systems.
    Carbon Copy Cloner allows you do not only create bootable incremental backups of your internal drive but also seperate tasks for backing up external HDs.
