Question HD disk utility + DVD startup utility Verify Permissions freezes, NO error message

Can anyone help with this? My macbook pro leopard OS 10.6 is NOT experiencing significant problems but the disk utility will NOT verify / repair permissions ALSO will NOT verify permissions off the startup DVD. Running the startup DVD if click to verify the disk the progress bar hardly moves - never comes close to completing - even so a message appears that the HD appears to be ok. I know this is not right, I am NOT a new mac user. I dread to have to try to erase the HD from the DVD because the DVD disk utility is not functioning properly. I don't mind reinstalling the OS original lacking the accumulated apps and tweaks but since the DVD utility is not behaving correctly it gives me the creeps that it might make matters much worse. Does anyone have any solid experience and a solution to this exact problem? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Dudley

I have only seen this one other time, and he reinstalled his OS and was fine after that.

I am not saying in this case that will be the same
result, but, personally, I think I would do that
    myself if it were me.

That's your call there... Just my opinion..

Arrow should the HD get erased first, or install the operating system without archive?

    Thanks for reply, Scott.

Do you know if he erased the HD first using the DVD startup disk, or installed the OS withOUT erasing first? The only experience I've had erasing a HD was on an iMac and the disk filled up nearly completely by the overwriting - I was on the phone with an Apple rep who told me to stop erasing because the monitor showed almost no space left, he said it wasn't suppose to be that way.

Isn't it bizarre the DVD startup utility can't function? What would cause that, does anyone know?

Thanks for your help, sincerely appreciate it. Dudley

I think he just installed the disc over existing,
and let the rest format w/o doing anything else what so ever.

No erasing anything, just the DVD, or disc....

My guess is it was just a snag in the system that
    just needs overwritten.

Just my opinion, but I would not erase anything.

Still, your call, unless I check Apple Dev. Forums,
and ask a couple guys, I cannot be positive.
