    New Computer for College

    Hello,

I just recently sold my MacMini Server and Cinema Display to make room and essentially, future proof the next four years of my life (at least). I'll be going to college and am in desperate need of a laptop anyway, so I am currently trying to figure it all out.

I am tied between the MacBook Pro Retina 13" and 13" MacBook Air. They are both extremely portable, but one is substantially more in cost than the other. They are both within budget, but I'd like to get all the angles.

I am a wanna-be graphic designer that dabbles in video editing as well. My majors in college are business and communications so having a laptop that has a little bit of power wouldn't be a bad thing, but I don't necessarily want it to be overkill..

If I were to get the MacBook Pro, it would be the baseline model. As per the Air, it would be the baseline with an upgrade to the RAM (8GB.)

Anyone have any thought out insight? I'm extremely analytic and indecisive so all opinions help.

Welcome to our forum first of all...

Secondly, if you are going to be using it for graphic designing, screen real estate is another big factor as well to consider...

Of course, money is usually always a factor as well....

Disk capacity is a major hurdle with the newer lightweight Macs. As for video editing, get the most power and memory available. Software is big and the longer the video the more the computer will bog down.

OK, if you can afford the base 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display, for an extra $100 you can get the base model 15" Standard MacBook Pro.
    • Bigger Screen - more real estate for those photo and editing applications
    • More storage - 500GB as opposed to 128GB - admittedly not flash storage, but large videos take up a lot of space
    • Less RAM out of the box, but the standard MacBook pros currently allow for easy RAM upgrade, and 3rd Party RAM is a LOT cheaper than what Apple charge
    • Dual Graphics chips - Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M...great if you are a gamer too

    • Mmm...just thought I'd trow that into the mix

    Thanks for the responses.

I'm going for something that is both portable (13in ONLY) and somewhat cost effective. Not something that is going to be completely obsolete once I get my iMac.
