    Resolved at last

After the odd error message I was getting, I changed settings to use generic BT SMTP server. This generated an authentication error code 553 which meant I had to log into my BT Yahoo account and set up my non-BT account as an approved email address. The SMTP settings were then the BT ones for my BT account. BT tried to say it was not their fault and charge me for the advice - they accepted in the end that it was a change they had made and I got it resolved at no cost. Took an age though and in the end if BT helpdesk had known that the SMTP settings were being tightened up to exclude 'unauthenticated' third party email clients then this would have been a lot easier to fix!

    Oh well.....
