The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. HELP!

I have inserted a 64gb micro sd card into the adaptor and plugged it into my laptop to do my first time machine backup. It was stuck on partitioning for like 4 hours so I unplugged it and tried again but got this message. Formatting in disk utility does not work and there is no option to repair or verify disk. When I use the erase option, i erase with Mac OS Extended (journeled) but it gets stuck on partitioning for like 5 hours like the time machine back up. What do I do please?

I guess it's possible that the card might be faulty....if it's brand new, I would take it back and get it replaced.
