Question Should I upgrade my MacBook 2.1 RAM and Hard Drive?

Ok my daughter has an old MacBook 2.1 that still works fine just a bit slow. It has 1 gb total of RAM and an old 120GB hard drive. I was thinking about increasing the RAM to the Maximum supported 3GB (2-2GB sticks). Then I was going to see if I could get an SSD drive that would work. The RAM would be about $40 and the SSD about $70. Is it worth it to bother upgrading or not on this older machine. The processor is a Core 2 Duo 2.16 Ghz. The OS is Snow Leopard. Only thing I think this is SATA 1 so I'm not sure an SSD will even work in this system.

Should I bother or just consider it too old to upgrade?

Personally, I wouldn't bother if it's working. Keep the money for a newer Mac because all the more recent wires, drives and software as they come will slowly push you into having to buy a newer one. By the past I found that planning for the purchase of a newer computer was a good way to teach kids how to be resourceful in finding ways to save for a special reason.

Well working would be a stretch....it's limping and very slow bootup. I've read of many others upgrading who saw dramatic speed increases with SSD and more RAM. Personally I am a PC guy but if I can keep from buying another laptop for a year or two I'm all for it. MacBooks are just way too expensive in my opinion.

Should I upgrade my MacBook 2.1 RAM and Hard Drive?

If you head over to http://www.crucial.com/ and use the "Memory advisor" tool on the front page, you will be directed at the correct RAM modules for your particular model MacBook. Crucial also SSD so you should also be advised as to what SSD would be compatible.

JezzerP, I'm needing RAM in my '06. I already upgraded from 1GB to 2GB, but a genius I trust suggests buying another 2GB from Crucial. He said that will cause overclocking of my machine, but that it shouldn't be a real problem. Any thoughts? Thanks.
